Accessible Routes & Elements (IBC 1104)

An accessible route is the continuous, unobstructed path that connects accessible spaces and elements. IBC 1104 and A117.1 Chapter 4 set its clear width, passing and turning space, running and cross slope, permitted changes in level, door maneuvering clearances, reach ranges, and limits on protruding objects. At least one accessible route has to connect site arrival points, accessible entrances, and every required accessible space.

The common mistake is a route pinched below its clear width by furniture, fixtures, or casework; doors without the required maneuvering clearance on the latch and approach sides; or protruding objects hanging into the path.

Reviewers trace the route end to end — arrival to entrance to space — checking width, clearances, and slope the whole way, because a single choke point breaks it.
