Exit Sign Requirements (IBC 1013)

Exit signs mark the path out, and IBC 1013 governs where they go and how they perform. An illuminated exit sign is required at every exit and exit-access door requiring an exit, and along egress paths wherever the way to an exit isn't immediately visible — with no point in a corridor more than 100 feet (or the listed viewing distance) from the nearest visible sign. Signs must be internally or externally illuminated and connected to emergency power that keeps them lit for at least 90 minutes on primary power loss.

Directional signs with chevrons are required where the direction of egress isn't obvious.

The common mistake is missing directional signage at corridor intersections or a sign spaced beyond its visibility limit, leaving a stretch of path unmarked. Reviewers trace the egress path and confirm a visible exit sign at every decision point and door, plus the 90-minute emergency-power provision — gaps in signage are a frequent and easily-fixed comment.
