Structural Design Loads & Combinations (IBC Chapter 16)

Chapter 16 defines the loads a structure must resist and points to ASCE 7 for the values. Dead loads (self-weight), live loads (Table 1607.1, by occupancy), snow (1608), wind (1609), seismic (1613), and rain (1611) are applied together through the load combinations in 1605. The design also has to identify the lateral force-resisting system that carries wind and seismic.

The set should carry a clear design-criteria block: the loads used, the governing load combinations, and the lateral system — enough for a reviewer to spot-check the analysis.

The common mistake is a structural notes sheet that omits the live-load basis or the wind and seismic parameters, forcing the reviewer (or an automated pre-check) to guess. Reviewers look for the design criteria stated outright, because everything in the calculations traces back to it.
