Wind Design Basics (IBC 1609 / ASCE 7)

Wind design under Section 1609 and ASCE 7 rests on a few parameters that belong on the design-criteria sheet: the ultimate design wind speed for the site, the exposure category (B, C, or D, based on surrounding terrain), the enclosure classification, and the resulting pressures. Those pressures split into two jobs — the main wind force-resisting system, and components and cladding (C&C), which governs windows, doors, roofing, and their attachments.

A common mistake is a wind basis that lives only on a text notes sheet (easy for a person or a pre-check to miss), or an exposure category that doesn't match the actual site conditions.

Reviewers check the design wind speed, the exposure category against the site, and that C&C pressures are provided for the envelope elements — not just the overall structure.
